Special Tea This Week:

Rooibos –
We’ll feature some of our great rooibos blends this week including Blueberry Rooibos, Jamaica Rooibos, Ginger Lime Green Rooibos, and Rooibos Chai. The flavor of rooibos tea is naturally sweet (without sugar added) and slightly nutty, with a full mouth feel. It is naturally caffeine free.

South African "red bush" translates as Rooibos (roy-boss) (Aspalanthus linearis). This plant thrives in the micro-climate of the Cape Province area. The fine needle-like leaves are bruised, fermented, and then sun-dried to make a tasty, aromatic tea. Rooibos has been long known for its many medicinal properties: soothing upset stomachs, aiding with digestion, calming nervous tension, and providing relief from allergies such as eczema. Rooibos is an excellent source of antioxidants, which appear to reduce the risk of certain chronic diseases including cancer. Studies show that Rooibos can promote healthy skin, teeth, and bones as well as lower blood pressure and protect against heart disease. Rich in vitamins and minerals, Rooibos is completely safe for pregnant and breastfeeding women, as well as children.

Special Tea This Week: Peppermint

A classic herbal tisane of organic peppermint leaves from the US Pacific Northwest soothes the digestive system and according to the ancients, promotes focus and clear thinking. Peppermint grown in Washington State and Oregon is prized as the best in the world.

According to Wikipedia: "Though there have been no human clinical trials on the health benefits or risks of peppermint tea, some believe peppermint tea has healing effects because of the menthol that it contains. It is said to ease such problems as irritable bowel syndrome, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, headaches. Its minty flavor can take the edge off bad breath. It is also said to control mild asthma, manage stress and ward off the common cold. In some countries, peppermint tea preparations list these proposed effects on their labels.

"However, peppermint has properties that may relax the lower esophageal sphincter, allowing the contents of the stomach to move upwards into the esophagus. For this reason, patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) are advised to avoid peppermint, at least in theory. On the other hand, precisely because it calms and relaxes the muscles along the intestinal tract, thus reducing spasms, peppermint may have beneficial effects in treating digestive symptoms like diarrhea and colic."
